Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Renee Dembowski and I live in beautiful Cairns in FNQ. I am extremely passionate about my family, friends the FNQ region and seeing businesses thrive through the effective use of social media. I am an extremely creative person with BIG ideas and funnily enough, I also LOVE stats/data! I am extremely proud to say was the very first person to be awarded the only nationally recognised Diploma of Social Media Marketing in Australia and am now a qualified trainer assisting students to embark on their own exciting career in social media. 

Why did you get into social media?

Before I was lucky enough to work in social media I was a Business Performance and Improvement Officer with the Department of Defence. This role required me to analyse the performance of the department in a number of different areas and report the results with suggestions on efficiency improvement to a board of stakeholders. In 2008 a restructure in government saw my role relocated to Townsville. At the time I didn’t know it but it was a blessing in disguise. While I loved the role and it satisfied my analytical brain, my creative flair was not being nurtured. While I was pregnant with my second child, I started helping my husband with a local publication which local businesses advertised in. Businesses who advertised in the publication saw they were missing out on advertising opportunities via our publications Facebook page and I assisted them with setting up their social media platforms, this increased awareness of their businesses services and products. Before I knew it, there was a huge demand for my services, I landed my first big job a couple of months later. I have not looked back. 

What do you love most about social media?

I love that it is attainable for any business on any budget. I love that businesses can engage with their clients directly and in real time. I love that it is not too ‘stiff’ or ‘corporate’. I love that any business can inject a bit of personality into their socials and have a bit of fun with their clients. I love that you can think outside of the box, nothing is out of bounds, I have been able to successfully execute a number of social media campaigns and measure their impact/success. I know it sounds a bit strange, but watching the impact of these campaigns is what really gets my adrenaline running.

What is your favourite platform and why? 

For me, Facebook is still king! It is so versatile and has such a wide and varied demographic using it. It still blows my mind to think that if it was a country, it would be the largest country in the world by way of population.

Why is it important to get formal qualifications in social media? 

Social media marketing is a highly sought after skill-set in the marketing world today. The Diploma of Social Media Marketing will introduce you to new areas of digital and social media marketing and/or expand your existing knowledge and experience, giving you an advantage in this competitive job market.There are many people out there who claim to be expert in the social media field however very few have formal qualifications. Being able to construct a post is not enough, you need to be able to identify the goal of your social media efforts, strategise towards that goal and measure the success/impact.

Tell us about your course 

The Diploma of Social Media Marketing is engaging, comprehensive, forward thinking, and fills a clear gap in business and marketing qualifications. Through this Diploma, you will not only learn all there is to know about social media, you will build a social media marketing strategy and implementation plan which you can immediately apply to your career and/or business. I can offer my students another layer of support as I don’t just train people in this field, I currently own and operate my own social media company so can advise and give guidance using my real life experience. Even though the Diploma is delivered online, I am available for my students via FB closed group, phone or email. It is not just a set and forget training model.

What advice would you give to someone getting started in social media?

1) Start your business (and social pages) the way you intend to finish.  Make sure you set everything up properly from the get go. 

2) Sometimes people can be so focussed on setting up their clients businesses and social media strategies, they forget to put time and effort into their own.  Make sure you give your socials the love they deserve. 

3) You need to think big to stand out, mediocre does not cut it. 

4) Son't be afraid to inject a bit of fun/personality!

What is one thing that people would not know about you that you do not share on social media? 

It is super boring, that is why I have kept it off social media ;-)
