Social Media Stories - Jordan Lomax

In this series, we share the stories of social media marketers who are doing amazing things in the industry.

This week we meet Jordan Lomax, who is the owner of The Social Lab Australia and was a speaker at the 2019 Social Media Marketing Summit.

How did you get started in social media?

When I graduated from university in Perth, WA - social media was a quick side note in the “digital” unit… the only mention of digital in the entire marketing and advertising degree. I made the move to Sydney soon after to gain experience in the industry, and my graphic design background helped me land a spot on the social team at OMD Sydney - as their social and design assistant. Luckily for me, my first job in social gave me experience on some of the biggest brands in Australia, which really helped kickstart my career in the industry.

What do you love most about social media?

What I love most about social media is the ability to really have a tone of voice and bring personality to your brand (or be your own brand!). It’s such an amazing medium for connecting with your customers, and I’m certain that so many business’ wouldn’t do half as well as they do had it not been for them being able to show their personality on social. There’s so much room for bringing a business to life (when you compare it to something like a billboard!) - and even small things like community management tone of voice and personality can make or break you.

Who is your biggest influence?

I definitely don’t have just one source of inspiration or influence when it comes to social, but I do think pop culture and “memes” are very influential in how I tackle social. I think one of the best ways to use social is by being reactive (and quick) to what people are consuming and talking about, and so generally a lot of my influence and inspiration comes from what’s happening already - both from a topic and a style perspective.

Why did you become a member of SMMI?

I became a member of SMMI because I think it’s really important to surround yourself with others doing similar things - the value of getting in a room with link minded individuals can’t be beaten - and especially for events like the Social Media Marketing Awards, and the Summit, it really is a great way to connect with the industry. Even just in the first year of being a member, I was able to meet some awesome people through the FB group and speaking at the Summit, and have no doubt those connections will continue!

How would your friends describe you?

My friends would say I can’t say no - I’m always taking on too much and then regretting it when I’m up at 3am to hit a deadline! Outside of work, my friends would probably say I’m far too into TikTok for my age and easily amused (I’ll laugh at anything, honestly anything).

What do you think is a trend in social media in 2020?

TIKTOKKKK! The amount of conversations I’ve had with clients in the first couple of weeks in 2020 alone wanting to get involved in TikTok is crazy. I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how this plays out, given my personal opinion is that TikTok really isn’t the place for brands - and business’ should approach with caution to not end up looking like they are just trying to “connect with the kids”. I think more individuals will start to grow on the platform, and brands should think about how they can utilise those popular content creators as a new type of influencer. Outside of TikTok itself, I think the style of content - quick, low quality, humorous “vine like” content - is going to filter onto other channels, and take over the perfect Instagram style content that we’ve seen populating our feeds for the past couple of years.
